The churches were constructed from the local rock laterite, which is porous, so there was a need to whitewash it regularly. The lime compound with which this was done was made from oyster shells. This had the effect of proofing the walls against moisture, although the heavy monsoon rain- fall meant that the work had to be repeated every three or four years. Since laterite was' coarse and unsuited to fine carving, the more important churches, such as the Basilica of Born Jesus in Old Goa, have facades of basalt that had to be specially imported, but which could be sculpted with ease. Apart from these deliberate concessions, other features that make the churches unique are due to the work of the local Indian arti- sans who built them. The floral decoration inside the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Old Goa is very Indian, as is some of the flamboyant woodcarving to be found in churches throughout Goa. All churches in Goa share several common features.
The most striking of these is the reeds, or ornamented backdrop, to the altar. Since most of Goa's large churches were built in the 16th and 17th centuries, the reeds designs conform to the styles of the age - mainly massive, very ornate and heavily gilded. In front of the reeds is the main altar and then the channel, which is sometimes decorated with carvings or paintings on the walls. Many of Goa's churches are constructed in a cruciform design with side altars in the transepts. Houses Sadly the houses of the landed gen- try are gradually disappearing, although there are still a few excellent examples to be seen and a couple that can be visited. In the grandest houses, the layout allows for a huge frontage, often with floor to ceiling glass patio doors and tiny wrought-iron balconies in front of each window. In the smaller houses the emphasis is on a wide veranda that almost encircles the house and provides plenty of welcome shade.
